Engineered Floors

Engineered floors are also known as laminate flooring and floating floors.

Floating floors vary in prices depending on the type and quality. It is much cheaper relative to floorboards, quick and easy to upgrade floors and more practical alternative in certain situations.

By definition, it is literally a floor that “floats” on top of the existing subflooring. Floating floors are manufactured timber floors often made with MDF or plywood substrate with either a solid timber veneer or manufactured laminate veneer.

Floating floors can be laid over concrete, plywood, vinyl flooring and tiles.

We highly recommend the use of Australian made engineered floors – raw or prefinished. Using Australian hardwood products such as Big River Timber is less susceptible to the effects of moisture and temperature change than solid timber floors.

Moisture Content and Acclimatisation

The moisture content of timber is the percentage weight of water present in the timber compared to the weight of timber with all water removed.

Timber is natural product that expands and contracts according to temperature and the surrounding air. As a rule, timber should be acclimatized before installation.

The right Moisture content for laying a floor will be determined by a number of factors such as location, heating and cooling where it is going to be laid. The flooring should be stacked within the building in such a way that allows air flow around all of your boards.

Flooring should be left to gradually adjust to its new climate first, control humidity and allow the timber to expand or contract, increase or decrease its natural moisture content before installation.

We recommend acclimatization period of at least 2 weeks.

The expansion and contraction is also managed by laying boards with expansion joints between the flooring and walls.

In addition, once timber is installed, it should also be left to acclimatize prior to sanding and polishing. This enables the adhesive, if any, (depending how it is installed) to cure.
